Dependency Management and Attack Surface Reduction

An average enterprise container carries hundreds of dependencies, and up to 90% of image content comes from open source the deploying organisation neither maintains nor fully sees. Scanning catches known CVEs after integration, but does nothing about origin, integrity, or the compilation flags an upstream maintainer picked. As SLSA and EO 14028 push dependency transparency from best practice to requirement, that invisible surface becomes an audit problem as well as a security one.

CleanStart Platform enforces dependency integrity at three layers: hermetic builds with full namespace isolation and zero network access, source-level verification that recompiles every dependency from verified upstream, and minimalism that strips transitive inclusions and isolates application libraries into private namespaces invisible to system scanners. The foundation ships a hardened glibc, FIPS 140-3 modules, and minimal system files, with SBOMs and in-toto attestations generated as part of the build. The result is near-zero CVEs in production, hours instead of weeks to patch, and reproducible builds where test, staging, and production images are cryptographically identical.
